LIMITED LICENCES

Losing your licence due to demerit points or because of a disqualification imposed by the court can be a major hassle. It can mean that you can't meet your employment obligations or help with your daily family commitments such as picking the kids up from school or going to sports practice.

To alleviate the stress and inconvenience of being unable to drive the law allows you in certain circumstances to apply for a limited licence, also known as a work licence. A work licence will be granted on certain terms if you can satisfy the court that failure to grant a licence will cause undue hardship to others (family members, employer etc) or excessive hardship to you (for example you will lose your job).

After 28 days from when you were disqualified, or immediately if suspended due to demerit points,  you can apply to the court to grant a limited licence that allows you to drive on certain terms for the remainder of your suspension or disqualification period.

The application process can be complicated and it is recommended you seek legal advice to assist. The cost of a licence varies depending on the complexity of the order sought and the police view. There is a $150 filing fee in some cases.
